You don't need to learn every tool. Pick one thing that saves you time this week, get good at it, then add the next. These are the best places to begin.

Use AI responsibly - and actually save time.

AI won't replace good teaching, and using it doesn't make you lazy. Here's how I use it in my own classroom, plus the prompts and training to do the same.

Build staff capability that sticks.

Professional learning that respects teachers’ time and shows up in classrooms the next day - not another PD session that goes nowhere.

Tristan Heron explaining how Pixton transformed a classroom assessment task

Pixton: The Comic Tool That Changed How My Students Engaged With an Assessment

August 30, 2026•5 min read

Pixton is a simple, drag-and-drop online comic creation tool, and it's one I've come back to year after year. I first used it to rescue a graphic novel assessment task that middle-to-lower ability students were genuinely struggling to engage with, and it turned things around almost immediately. Since then, I've used it for holiday narratives, biographies, and story tasks, and it works well beyond English too, in science, geography, and maths.

Let me tell you about a tool that genuinely changed how my students approached a particular assessment task: Pixton.

What is Pixton?

Pixton is an online comic creation tool. Students can build genuinely impressive comics, drawing on graphic novel techniques to create a wide range of content.

It's built to be simple. Everything works through drag-and-drop, and students can adjust settings, objects, characters, text, and captions with very little learning curve involved.

That simplicity matters more than it might sound like on paper. A lot of creative tools ask students to learn the software before they can even start being creative. Pixton mostly gets out of the way, letting students focus on the actual story or idea they're trying to tell rather than fighting with the interface.

How did you first start using Pixton?

Out of necessity, honestly.

My school had an assessment task where students created their own graphic novel excerpt, based on a graphic novel we were studying in class. It was a fantastic task in principle, but I had a group of middle-to-lower ability students who I knew were going to find it a genuinely uphill battle. I could see the engagement problem coming before it even started.

As a teacher who knew these students and how they learned, I went looking for a solution. That's where Pixton came in. I discovered it, tried it out myself first, and decided to give it a go with my class.

I think that step, trying it myself before handing it to students, is worth mentioning specifically. I wasn't willing to gamble a whole class's engagement on a tool I hadn't at least tested. Playing around with it first meant I knew roughly what to expect, and could anticipate where students might get stuck before it actually happened in the lesson.

Did it actually work?

Genuinely, yes. I had close to 100% engagement and buy-in from the whole class.

Was the work itself outstanding? No. Did every student finish the task? No. But every single student had a go, created something, and stayed engaged with the activity. Small wins can still be big achievements, and for that particular group, getting everyone actively attempting the task was exactly the win I was looking for.

I think it's worth being honest about what "worked" actually meant here. This wasn't a case of turning every student into a confident graphic novelist overnight. It was about replacing disengagement and avoidance with genuine attempts, however imperfect those attempts were. For that particular cohort, that shift was significant.

Have you kept using Pixton since then?

Consistently, year in and year out. It's become one of the tools I return to again and again, because it's creative, a little different, and lets students work across a genuine range of text types while still using an EdTech tool with a clear purpose.

That consistency is genuinely rare for me. I try a lot of tools that get used once and then quietly dropped when something new comes along. Pixton has stuck around because it keeps earning its place, not because I feel obligated to keep using it.

As an English teacher, I've used it for:

  • A "dream holiday" comic, as part of an On the Road module

  • Biography and autobiography tasks

  • Original stories connected to whatever we're studying in class

Is Pixton only useful for English classes?

Not at all. I think it has real potential across other subjects too.

In science, it could illustrate an experiment, or introduce a particular scientist or scientific concept. In geography, it could show environmental degradation, or the impact of change on animals and plant life. In maths, it could walk through a mathematical concept or process in comic form, turning something abstract into something more visual and memorable.

As with most EdTech tools, you're really only limited by your imagination here.

I'd genuinely encourage teachers outside English to give it a proper look, rather than assuming it's a language-and-literature-only tool. The comic format is really just a structure for communicating a sequence of ideas visually, and that structure applies to almost any subject with a process, a narrative, or a concept worth breaking into steps.

Want to see more of the specific ways Pixton has been used across different subjects? I've covered it a few times on the Tristan Heron YouTube channel, including in past Innovative EdTech episodes.

Is Pixton free to use?

Pixton runs on a freemium model, meaning there's a free plan alongside paid options. The free plan has real limitations, and depending on what you want your students to actually create, those limitations might not give you everything you need.

I ended up subscribing to a paid plan myself, and genuinely found it worthwhile for the extra features it unlocked. That's a decision worth weighing up based on how often and how deeply you plan to use the tool, rather than assuming the free version alone will cover everything.

If you're only planning a one-off activity, the free plan is a completely reasonable place to start. It's really once you start using a tool consistently, the way I have with Pixton, that a paid plan starts to make more sense, since the extra features get more use out of the investment over time.

If you want to see more tools like Pixton broken down properly, join an upcoming Innovative EdTech Workshop. We go through practical classroom tools like this one, live.
